RED DOG AND THE ENVIRONMENT

By law, mines like Red Dog are zero-discharge facilities and are highly regulated by local and state governments, along with federal agencies such as the U.S. Coast Guard and Environmental Protection Agency.

Zero discharge means that Red Dog is not allowed to discharge water that has been used in the mining process. Instead, it is required to recycle and reuse process water - and to permanently stored it in a permitted tailings pond. The mine is allowed to discharge natural precipitation such as rain and snow but this water is stored until it can be processed through a state-of-the-art water treatment plant. The water discharged meets all regulatory requirements - and is much cleaner than the natural groundwater.
