For the Inupiat people of the Northwest Arctic, the Red Dog Mine has provided the economic foundation that supports jobs, advancement opportunities and a local government revenue stream that enables the area to become more self-reliant. Now, some people who oppose another mining prospect far to the south of us, have collected enough signatures to place two "clean water" initiatives on the ballot. These initiatives would shut down all large-scale metal mining in Alaska.
We have compiled information on mining, its economic impact and some environmental issues to help Alaskans make an informed decision.
